Afraid of Brain or Spine Surgery? Read This First

Few words frighten patients and families as much as ‘brain surgery’ or ‘spine surgery’. The fear is understandable — these operations involve the most precious and delicate parts of the body, and the imagination quickly runs to the worst possibilities. As a neurosurgeon, I see this fear every day, and I have watched it keep people from treatments that could have helped them enormously. So, before that fear makes any decision for you, I’d like to speak honestly and calm some of it with facts.

The Fear Is Mostly Built on Outdated Ideas

Much of what people fear about brain and spine surgery comes from frightening stories, old films, and information that is decades out of date. The reality of modern neurosurgery is very different. These operations are now planned with remarkable precision, using detailed imaging and advanced techniques that allow us to work with a care and accuracy that simply didn’t exist in the past. In experienced hands, and for the right reasons, these are carefully controlled procedures with strong safety records — not the gambles people imagine.

The Most Important Truth — Surgery Is the Last Step

Here is something that may surprise you: When someone comes to me, my first job is an accurate diagnosis, and my next is usually to recommend the gentlest effective treatment. Surgery enters the conversation only when it’s genuinely the right answer — when there’s significant pressure on the brain, spinal cord or nerves, or a problem that simply won’t settle any other way. If a surgeon reaches for an operation as the first answer rather than the last, be cautious.

Letting Go of the Biggest Myths

  • Myth: brain & spine surgery usually causes paralysis: This is the fear that stops people most, and it’s largely unfounded. Modern surgery, done for the right reasons with today’s techniques like Microsurgery, Endoscopy, real time navigation and monitoring, has a strong safety record. The catastrophic outcome people dread is far rarer than the myth suggests.
  • Myth: you’ll be bedridden for months: Modern approaches, including minimally invasive technology, often allow people to be up and moving soon after surgery. Recovery is real work, but the image of months flat in bed is not accurate.
  • Myth: all brain and spine surgeries are high risk & life threatening: No, this is not accurate. Risk depends on type of procedure – Major or Minor.

The Questions My Patients Ask Me Most

Are all brain tumours malignant (cancerous)?

No, brain tumours are very often benign and can be removed without leading to permanent deficits.

Can only adults have Brain Tumour?

Brain tumours can occur at all ages and in children too. Even a child as young as one year old.

Is a Brain stroke only treated with Medicines?

No, some strokes have hemorrhages which require angiography followed by Endovascular or Surgical Intervention depending on the cause.

So, if brain or spine surgery has been mentioned, or you’re living with a problem out of fear of where it might lead, please don’t let preconceived notions decide for you. Get an accurate diagnosis and honest advice. Very often the answer is not surgery at all — and when it is, the reality is far less frightening than the fear that precedes it.
