Emergency & Trauma typically involve acute, life-threatening conditions or severe injuries requiring immediate medical attention. Sudden illnesses or conditions that pose an immediate risk to a person’s life or long-term health.
Cardiovascular: Heart attack, stroke, sudden cardiac arrest, severe chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat
Respiratory: Severe shortness of breath, choking, severe asthma attack, pulmonary embolism.
Neurological: Sudden loss of consciousness, seizures (especially new onset or prolonged), sudden weakness or numbness, severe headache (especially with other symptoms like vision changes or stiff neck).
Gastrointestinal: Severe abdominal pain, significant gastrointestinal bleeding (vomiting blood or blood in stool)
Metabolic: Diabetic emergencies (severe hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia with altered mental status), severe dehydration
Infections: Severe infections like sepsis, meningitis.
Obstetric/Gynecological: Ectopic pregnancy rupture, severe bleeding during pregnancy, severe preeclampsia/eclampsia
Overdose/Poisoning: Accidental or intentional ingestion of harmful substances.
Traumatic Injuries involve severe physical injuries from external forces.
Blunt Trauma: Injuries from impact with an object or surface, such as in car accidents, falls from height, assaults, and sports injuries. This can result in:
- Fractures (broken bones)
- Dislocations
- Sprains and strains
- Internal bleeding
- Head injuries (concussions, skull fractures, brain bleeds)
- Chest injuries (rib fractures, lung contusions, pneumothorax)
- Abdominal injuries (organ damage)
Penetrating Trauma: Injuries caused by an object piercing the skin and underlying tissues, such as gunshot wounds, stabbings, and impalement injuries. These often involve significant internal damage and bleeding
Crush Injuries: Injuries where a part of the body is compressed by heavy objects, leading to tissue damage, swelling, and potential compartment syndrome
Amputations: Traumatic loss of a limb or part of a limb.
Severe Lacerations: Deep cuts with significant bleeding or involving nerves, tendons, or blood vessels.
Near Drowning: Suffocation due to submersion in liquid
