TEVAR Procedure in Ahmedabad
Treating Thoracic Aortic Disease Without Opening the Chest
The development of TEVAR – Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair – fundamentally changed the risk profile of thoracic aortic intervention. At EPIC Multispecialty Hospital, Ahmedabad, the TEVAR procedure in Ahmedabad is available through our integrated vascular and cardiac surgery programme for patients with thoracic aortic disease who meet the anatomical and clinical criteria for endovascular repair.
What Is TEVAR and How Does It Work?
TEVAR uses an endovascular stent graft – a fabric tube supported by a metallic framework – deployed inside the thoracic aorta through a catheter introduced from the femoral artery in the groin. The stent graft is compressed onto a delivery system, advanced to the target segment of the aorta under X-ray guidance, and then released. As it expands, it seals against the aortic wall above and below the diseased segment, excluding the aneurysm or the dissection false lumen from the circulation.
No chest incision. No aortic cross-clamping. No cardiopulmonary bypass in most cases. The recovery is dramatically shorter than open surgery.
Conditions Treated by TEVAR at EPIC Hospital
Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm (TAA)
A thoracic aortic aneurysm is an abnormal dilatation of the descending thoracic aorta – typically above 5.5 cm. The danger is rupture – which carries an extremely high immediate mortality. TEVAR is the preferred treatment for descending thoracic aortic aneurysms in patients with suitable anatomy – a sufficient “landing zone” of healthy aorta above and below the aneurysm.
Complicated Type B Aortic Dissection
Type B aortic dissection involves a tear in the inner layer of the descending thoracic aorta (distal to the origin of the left subclavian artery). Complicated Type B dissection – defined by malperfusion of the spinal cord, kidneys, bowel, or limbs – requires urgent intervention. TEVAR covers the tear entry point, redirecting blood flow into the true lumen and collapsing the false lumen.
Traumatic Thoracic Aortic Injury
High-velocity trauma can cause acute traumatic aortic injury at the isthmus – the junction between the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta. TEVAR has become the standard treatment for blunt thoracic aortic injury – faster than open repair, with lower mortality and paraplegia rates.
The TEVAR Procedure at EPIC Multispecialty Hospital
Before the Procedure
CT angiography with three-dimensional reconstruction is performed to plan the procedure – determining stent graft dimensions, deployment site, and access vessel suitability. In elective cases, preoperative spinal fluid drainage may be planned to reduce paraplegia risk.
During the Procedure
TEVAR is performed in our hybrid cath lab/operating theatre under general or regional anaesthesia. The delivery system is introduced through the femoral artery. Deployment is guided by high-resolution fluoroscopy and, in selected cases, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Once the stent graft is deployed, contrast injection confirms exclusion of the aneurysm or false lumen.
Recovery After TEVAR
Most TEVAR patients are mobilised the day after the procedure and discharged within 3 to 7 days. Blood pressure monitoring and strict antihypertensive management are continued after discharge, alongside a programme of CT imaging surveillance to confirm ongoing exclusion of the treated segment.

TEVAR Procedure in Ahmedabad - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between TEVAR and EVAR?
TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair) treats disease in the thoracic (chest) aorta – specifically the descending thoracic aorta. EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) treats disease in the abdominal aorta – the infrarenal aorta below the kidneys. The devices and access approaches are similar in principle, but the specific stent graft systems, planning requirements, and post-procedural concerns differ between the two locations.
Is TEVAR suitable for an emergency aortic dissection?
Yes, for complicated Type B dissection – where the dissection causes malperfusion of organs or limbs, ongoing severe pain, or rapid aortic expansion. Uncomplicated Type B dissection is initially managed medically. EPIC Hospital has 24/7 CT angiography and TEVAR capability for emergency aortic presentations.
What is the risk of paraplegia after TEVAR?
Spinal cord ischaemia – potentially causing paraplegia – is the most feared specific complication of TEVAR. It occurs when the stent graft covers intercostal arteries that supply the spinal cord’s arterial blood supply. Risk is estimated before the procedure and mitigated with spinal fluid drainage where appropriate. At high-volume experienced centres, the risk of permanent paraplegia after elective TEVAR is in the range of 1 to 3%.
How long does the TEVAR stent graft last?
TEVAR stent grafts are designed for permanent implantation. However, endoleaks – leakage of blood into the excluded aneurysm sac – can develop over time and require re-intervention in a proportion of cases. This is why lifelong CT imaging surveillance is a mandatory component of post-TEVAR follow-up.
What monitoring is needed after TEVAR?
Lifelong imaging surveillance is required. The standard protocol involves CT angiography at 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months after TEVAR, and then annually thereafter. The purpose is to detect endoleaks, stent graft migration, new aneurysm formation in adjacent segments, and any other late complications requiring secondary intervention.
Can TEVAR be combined with open surgery?
Yes – hybrid procedures combine open surgical vessel debranching with TEVAR – reserved for cases where pure endovascular treatment is anatomically limited. EPIC Hospital’s combined cardiac and vascular surgery team performs hybrid aortic procedures.
Is TEVAR available as an emergency 24/7 at EPIC Hospital, Ahmedabad?
Yes. Thoracic aortic emergencies – complicated Type B dissection, acute traumatic aortic injury, contained aortic rupture – cannot wait for scheduled operating time. EPIC Multispecialty Hospital maintains 24-hour CT angiography capability and 24-hour access to TEVAR-capable vascular and cardiac surgeons.
How much does the TEVAR procedure cost in Ahmedabad?
TEVAR involves a complex stent graft device – typically the most significant cost component. Total procedure cost depends on the specific device used, the complexity of the case, the hospital stay duration, and ICU requirements. EPIC Hospital provides transparent, itemised cost estimates before elective TEVAR procedures in Ahmedabad.
