Dr. Gaurang Shah is a highly experienced gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeon who brings over two decades of surgical excellence to his patients. With more than 10,000 procedures performed across India and Australia, he offers a rare blend of technical skill, holistic care, and genuine empathy.

After graduating with top honors from MS University of Vadodara in 2000 and earning a Gold Medal in General Surgery in 2005, Dr. Shah moved to Melbourne with his family in 2007. He completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) at Alfred Health (six years of full-time training)—one of Australia’s leading quaternary hospitals affiliated with Monash University.

Dr. Shah has trained and worked extensively in colorectal surgery at Alfred, Frankston, Austin, Ballarat, and Townsville hospitals. His areas of expertise include:

  • Colorectal cancer surgery, including rectal cancers
  • Diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Anorectal conditions, such as hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulae, and pilonidal sinus
  • Minimally invasive techniques, including Doppler-guided hemorrhoid artery ligation, rectoanal repair, and laser treatment for fistulae
  • Advanced laparoscopic procedures for gallbladder and spleen surgery, bowel resections, and peptic perforations with intracorporeal suturing
  • All types of open and laparoscopic hernia repairs
  • Endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy, stricture dilatation, mucosal resection, and stent placement (GESA-accredited)

Dr Gaurang Shah is fluent in English, Gujarati, and Hindi, ensuring clear communication and comfort for patients from diverse backgrounds. His approach is calm, respectful, and deeply empathetic making even complex procedures feel less daunting.

His research involves colonic diverticular disease, various methods of database collection in healthcare and anorectal malformations.

Outside the operating theatre, Dr. Shah enjoys tennis, hiking, reading spiritual literature, and practicing meditation—activities that reflect his belief in balance, mindfulness, and whole-person care.
